Inside the Washington House

After two centuries, the House of Representatives in Washington D.C. have granted a nod for the citizens from the District of Columbia. This permits a position within the actual House of Representatives. It was a total shock to many people due to the fact that Columbia was not a state.

A lot had expected how the bill of District of Columbia will be squashed for the final acceptance since it is not a state. This has been understood two centuries ago that District of Columbia will probably never be offered a seat since it is not really a state. Utah was also given a fourth seat at the same time as the bill.

Only falling short of the amount of needed  residents, Utah will more than likely fill out the lack after the subsequent political election to get another seat within the House.

Since 1960, 435 seats have been filled in the House of Representatives. Although this is an important milestone, the point that the District of Columbia is not a state results in snafu within the majority House. Though it is really a milestone in the actual House of Representatives, opponents have plainly stated that members of the actual House are generally chosen by the folks of the states.

The House is scheduled to keep the 437 seats perhaps even after the 2010 census, which is when Utah is scheduled to be extending to a fourth district. Although this is the very first time this measure has actually went by the actual House, it is not the first time it has been discussed, nor debated. In 1978, it was pointed out that the District of Columbia needs to be offered a vote inside the actual House of Representatives; however, the amendment was discarded after it had been unable to be ratified by using a quorum three-fourth majority of the states.

The District of Columbia yet again attempted this specific scenario in 1993. That  attempt was aimed at making the District of Columbia into a full-pledged state of the United States. Again this proposal was rejected. For now the bill approval for any seat of District of Columbia will need to be determined yet through the Senate.

The District of Columbia argues that it has to be allowed to have a seat in the actual House of Representatives since just like various other states, they pay taxes and fight wars for the actual U.S. So, the controversy and battle goes on. It’s gonna be intriguing to find out if the District will indeed be granted what they wanted for almost 100’s of years.

The United States figured in numerous important wars in its background.  It engaged in war during the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and many others.  However, its most atypical involvement in warfare was in the one identified as “The Cold War.”

The Cold War lasted for many years.  It was called the Cold War as this particular war didn’t have any battlefield nor deployment of troops.  It simply was comprised of hostile silence between the United States and the Soviet Union from the mid-1940s, after World War II, and extended to the early portion of the 1990s.

The U . S and the Soviet Union were both Allied nations throughout the Second World War, meaning they were joined in fighting common foes, mainly the Axis nations.  Unusually, the hostilities involving the two nations started with the United States’ creation of the atom bomb close to the end of World War II.  Shortly after, the Soviet Union developed its own nuclear weapons.  The immensity of the destructive strength of nuclear bombs gave any nation that possessed them so called ‘superpowers.’  A heightened feeling of distrust came into being between the two nations of the other’s possible mistreatment of their military powers.  They directed their nuclear weapons at each other as a muted menace of retaliation if ever one particular nation made a decision to attack the opposite.

It was a staring competition that lasted almost half a century and created a huge strain on both economies.  Both nations needed to sustain “parity” of their nuclear weapons so neither land got more than the other thus tipping the balance of power and providing one combatant an unfair advantage.  This had been a peculiar logic in that the two nations held adequate weaponry to destroy the earth many times over but nonetheless they insisted on “having parity” through the entire Cold War.

Both countries were quite definitely aware that a nuclear conflict involving them would have resulted in the total destruction of existence on earth and must never be permitted to happen.  It would be useless for each nation to bring about the damage of the planet itself, yet, both stubbornly declined all routes towards peace-making.  No one acquiesced to stop their manufacture of nuclear arms.  The Cold War proceeded unmitigated decade after decade.

So instead of executing fights directly, the two countries fought each other through small wars all over the world.  The Soviet Union, working with China, happily added to the humiliating loss in Vietnam the U . S . suffered.  But the United States after that flipped around and armed the Afghan Mujahideen which lead to the defeat of the Soviet Union in their occupation of the country.  From proxy battles, the space race, and infrequent face offs such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Cold War continued for decades testing the will and resolve of both countries to never look away and give the other the extra edge.

Ultimately the stress on the economies of both countries took its toll in the early 1990s, specifically in the Soviet Union since the hassle of keeping such an expensive and useless war forced the Soviet financial state into failure and the empire cracked.  The U . S . had triumphed in the Cold War by pure will to survive and stubborn refusal to cave in.  This is usually a seldom spoken element of the American spirit but it is one that the Soviets realized to their own catastrophe not to test.  Hopefully no other “superpower” will ever think they are equipped to try it again.

A Look at The Violence Against Women Act

Senator Joseph Biden just announced his bid for the presidency; a candidacy which will certainly be embraced by the influential domestic violence lobby. As sponsor of the Violence against Women Act (VAWA), Senator Biden has won the cause of eliminating domestic violence and aligned himself with a very powerful feminist special interest. For a Democrat in the Senate, championing this cause is a political no-brainer. The question is will he risk the benefits of this political gravy train to admit this “Emperor” is not wearing clothes.

The domestic violence community is now a billion dollar industry, creating political fiefdoms of unprecedented power in our local communities. We have come to know domestic violence is at such epidemic proportions, that in our collective shame we have sanctioned a movement that has become cult-like in its power over our courts.

Each day, a few people turns into a target of this fake domestic violence, usually a very capable mother or father being given a restraining order in a few family court anywhere in this country. The complainants don’t even need to provide one piece of proof to support their complain yet the respondent needs to go through an extremely shameful process that even murderers and other criminals are not put through since they’re covered by the 6th Amendment.

Responding to a TRO is an arduous, humiliating, and expensive task. As a direct consequence, respondents are often separated from their children, suffer from depression, and exhibit indications of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Most of the falsely accused endure the emotional scars of never being vindicated.

Men are more likely to be wrongly accused and victimized by restraining orders although there are a growing number of female victims wrongfully served with restraining orders by abusive males. In a court case in San Francisco just lately, a woman was served a TRO despite her husband threw her down the stairs. Her clever husband claimed she was emotionally unpredictable and was afraid for his life and filing a restraining order was merely for his protection.

The topic of domestic violence is filled with complexities. It can’t be fixed by just one generic approach to all situations since family issues are unique and do not fit standard models. In case the statements are verifiable and supported with hard evidence, it’s only then the Violence against Women Act penalties and punishments should be used. Studies have shown that almost fifty percent of related cases don’t even meet the VAWA criteria and these cases must be subject to further evaluation and study before extreme measure are taken which will irreversibly ruin the members of the family. Additionally, there should be serious punishment to those who falsely accuse others or even their lawyers who aid them promote their wicked deeds to ensure that they could benefit from them.

Capital Hill should sanction the Violence Against Women Act, but with conditions that balance the system — a system that in some jurisdictions borders on fanatical. Senator Biden, we just can’t remain ignorant to the damage this legislation can cause innocent, gullible adults and kids swept up its tide wave.

America, please wake up!

Approved by:

To acquire the presidency in America, candidates should stir up the religious fervor of the voters (gay wedding/civil union) and then vocally (and in some situations visually) wear your (new) Evangelical beliefs on your sleeve. It once was candidate vs. candidate, after that party vs. party, big business vs. the common (wo)man, platform vs. platform, after that region vs. region, but now none of that matters as a new America has emerged, an America where the majority with a religious manifest regulations the minority with a secular agenda.

Religion has been the root of many conflicts and wars between nations and races throughout the course of history. Think of all the countries coping with power struggles between different religious factions such as Iraq or Yugoslavia, think of the Holocaust and how millions of Jews were murdered during the time of Nazi Germany, the reason of the African genocide, and the bitterly fought battles between Ireland and England eight hundred years ago. And now, we’re noticing the same happening in America. We have been separated by our own beliefs and ideals, with religion gaining in the majority. Splitting up of state and church has never been more argued than it is today.  All too soon, people in minority groups will face the same situations and possible persecution minorities in the past have faced as well. People would be converting left and right, not due to what they believe in the religion but because they want to be with the majority and they end up like those puppets of Bruce Schwartz, their actions being directed by another. There will be missionaries going from one house to the next similar to sales people offering their wares, claiming they’re on the righteous path and persuading you to join them.

The Constitution, particularly the First Amendment, is simply words written. What makes those words their power are the actions of the people of its country. With America and its people split up as it is today, how will it still hold true? Will it slowly change into an unbalanced and right wing rule? No one is sure but numerous fear that this may actually become an actuality in the 21st century, especially in the light of the issue around the previous presidential election.

In the presidential race back in 2004 that Republican George Bush won, 82% of those who voted stated that they made their choice dependent on their moral and religious beliefs.  Other issues similar to the state of the economy, the war happening in Iraq, concerns in education, energy, and also the environment were only secondary to that. Americans spoke and religion won out among the people more than any other concern. Our country is dealing with so many significant issues at the moment, does it make sense for people to turn to religion while managing these concerns? In all fairness, we must also ask those ourselves; can we not respect one another’s opinions even in case they’re on opposing sides? Can we not tolerate each other? Can we not give others the same respect and also treatment that we would like to receive ourselves? Whatever happened to the land of the free, our America, with our constitution’s clause of separating the state and the church?

Ask yourself this: Why are we needed to swear to tell the truth on the Bible while in court but the Ten Commandments isn’t to be put on view in our federal buildings?  What is in store for our future? Time will tell, together with the actions of the President.
