The Cold War: How It Started, Why It Lasted For So Very Long, and How It Ended

The United States figured in numerous important wars in its background.  It engaged in war during the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and many others.  However, its most atypical involvement in warfare was in the one identified as “The Cold War.”

The Cold War lasted for many years.  It was called the Cold War as this particular war didn’t have any battlefield nor deployment of troops.  It simply was comprised of hostile silence between the United States and the Soviet Union from the mid-1940s, after World War II, and extended to the early portion of the 1990s.  

The U . Ultimately the stress on the economies of both countries took its toll in the early 1990s, specifically in the Soviet Union since the hassle of keeping such an expensive and useless war forced the Soviet financial state into failure and the empire cracked.  The U . S . had triumphed in the Cold War by pure will to survive and stubborn refusal to cave in.  This is usually a seldom spoken element of the American spirit but it is one that the Soviets realized to their own catastrophe not to test.  Hopefully no other “superpower” will ever think they are equipped to try it again.

Lenin’s New Economic Policy and the USSR

Mikhail Gorbachev (1931- ) wasn’t the first to introduce Perestroika – the economic liberalization of the communist system along capitalistic lines.

Throughout the Russian civil war (1918-1922) the Bolsheviks implemented what they known as “War Communism” (1917-1921), the militarization of the economy. Between 1916 and 1920, industrial output plunged by around four fifths. Grain harvests in both 1920 and 1921 disastrously lost, triggering widespread starvation, claiming five million lives. A number of rebellions of sailors broke out, most famously in the Krohnstadt naval base.~In the years from 1918 to 1922, in the midst of the civil war in Russia, the Bolsheviks implemented a system referred to as “War Communism” in which businesses and industries were nationalized from 1917 to 1921. The policy had a negative result in the economy and during 1916 to 1920, the industrial result declined significantly.
