Pongal Festival is celebrated in some parts in India every first month of the year on the harvest season for rice. People rejoice the new crop during this holiday, where they celebrate the three-day harvest festival. One of the traditions that people do on this day, is, they cook the newly harvested rice in a special ceremony and they feed these to the bullocks and the cows. As part of the traditional celebration, these animals are painted for the festival.
In Tamil Nadu, located in the southern part of India, most especially, the Pongal Festival is considered to be one, if not the most popular festivals. The celebration of the Pongal falls in mid-January most of the time, and this also marks the start of a successful future for the Uttarayan (other wise known as the soujourn of the sun towards north). As the occasion runs for about three days (four days at most), Indians also swing and cook delectable Pongal, draw Kolam, as part if their accepted practices in celebration of the occasion.
For this special holiday, it is best to put on clothes that represents or symbolizes the harvest season, for instance, anything that bears the color and shades of green, which represents abundance and life, as well as yellow, which symbolizes the shade of ripes grains, would be great to put on for the three to four days celebration of the Pongal.
