The main issue about getting medical help overseas is what you can get and how much would it cost you.  In many socialized countries they will not provide you with full care, and sometimes not at all.  As Americans we like to complain about what we have, but in fact we have it much better than other countries, and becoming ill while traveling abroad could really open your eyes.  This is where travel insurance comes in.

Shop around for cheap travel insurance plans.  You can get several types of plans, such as senior citizen travel insurance.  This will be a backup from whatever other health care option you may have.

Know where the US Embassy or consular office is located when you do travel out of the country so that in the event something happens, you could go to them and know what to do. People sometimes have this misconception that an Embassy is just there to offer legal advice or some sort of protection which isn’t what they really do.  What they can do for you, is give you a list of contacts that can most likely help you recover lost baggage or goods, and they can provide you with contacts to help get you quality medical care if necessary.

Another thing to be mindful of while traveling abroad is hanging onto your passport and be sure you guard it with your life.  If your passport has been stolen, you will want to find the U.S. Embassy office right away so they can assist you to get a new one so you can follow your traveling schedule as planned. The passport is a must, so be mindful of this and that its a time sensitive issue.

Being imprisoned overseas is no fun either.  I can’t think of getting into prison, how much more in a foreign prison.  In most countries, fighting back could put you in more trouble.  It may not be sensible to us but then again we are a free country.
