Dance and Religion

Religious people can be categorized in two when it comes to the integration of dances in a spiritual activity. A few of them see dancing as insufficient in the renewal of energy for both mind and body. Another group disagrees and believes dancing as a powerful religious experience.

The manifestations of traditional dancing in religious behavior include rituals. The participants dance and enter a state of trance which opens them up for communication from the spiritual world. The participants of the ritual may recite prayers or even spells.

Native American Dancing

Dancing in the Native American society is performed for several reasons. It may be for happiness, sadness, rain, war, and worship. The rhythm of the beat is considered to play a part as a spirit guide. It is because of this that Ceremonial dances have left a huge mark for Native American history.

But still, there remained to be a few other people who performed dancing due to the music and for the enrichment of this art form.

Kerala Festival Dancing

The city of Kerala is well known for its local festivals that combine dancing in the celebration. This has earned social significant over the years. Here are Kerala’s several ceremonial dances:

Onam: Held between August and September, this is dances that represent religious harmony for various families. The dance also has specific requirements for example wearing new clothes and painting themselves with yellow, black, and red colors. The music is played through thakil and udukku, both of that are cultural instruments.

Mahasivarathri: This is an annual festival observed by the Hindus that involve lots of ceremonial dances as a way to commemorate the death of Lord Shiva in an attempt to save the world of destruction.

Vishu: This festival is held during the month of April, which is the New Year according to calendar of Malayalam. Like the above festivals, there are ceremonial dancing involved mainly to thank for the numerous supply of fruits, flowers, cereals, and coconuts, whilst wishing for good luck in the coming year.

Asian Ceremonial Dancing

In the Asian region, music as well as drama complement each other. The costumes and dance movements also have cultural importances. The dances are usually interpretations of traditional events. It can also depict myths or legends. As to how long the dance goes, it is depended on the length of the historical event, or story being danced to. The dance may also be for asking good luck.
