Maui is amongst the few places on earth where a tourist will find a snow-covered mountain peak and tropical beaches within miles of one another. As a result of diverse topography, it could be raining heavily on one side of the island while the other side is dry. While most Maui accommodations are situated on the dry side of the island, the unique topographical changes make it the perfect place to experience many different activities. Plus, Maui’s nearness to other islands makes it the perfect convenient location for an island hopping escape.
 
The west side of Maui is a dry, tropical paradise where one finds resorts, popular beaches and cobalt-blue waters. Towns like Kaanapali, Lahaina, Wailea and others are picturesque destinations with plenty to offer the vacationer. The east side of the island includes a single destination spot – Hana. This strange distribution is related to the island’s topography. Maui has a pair of volcanic mountains found in the northwest and southwest of the island. The bigger of the two features a 10,000-foot, snow-covered peak. Winds come in from the east and drench certain regions of island’s eastern side with up to twenty feet of precipitation per year. Compare this with the maybe 20 or so inches of annual rainfall the west side of the island gets, and it’s easy to see why the accommodations are where they are.
 
The landscape diversity on Maui makes it a location like no other. Enjoy pristine beaches and traditional tropical activities like snorkeling or catamaran sailing. In Kaanapali on the westernmost point of the island, guests can stretch out beneath the tropical sun on the island’s longest beach or embark on a whale-watching expedition, finishing out the day with a romantic dinner cruise into the sunset. Likewise, the east side of Maui could be the perfect spot for a helicopter or fixed-wing tour of the region’s blend of barren, volcanic landscape, mountains, lush rainforests, waterfalls and more.
 
Sport fishing fans will definitely want to head down to Lahaina – only five miles south of Kaanapali – to try their luck in reeling in a big game fish like mahi mahi or even the spectacular marlin. Lahaina, “the jewel in the crown of Maui”, is an historic place. Inquisitive vacationers will take a guided walking tour and discover the island’s rich tradition and long history, from its original settlement by the ancient Polynesians to the scope of modern life. Afterward, shopping and great eateries abound.
 
Maui is proudly located in the Hawaiian archipelago, making it an ideal jump-off spot for an aerial tour of Hawaii – the big island – to the east. It’s also merely a quick trip along the channel to see Molokai or Lanai where a technical scuba diving adventure lets travelers dip themselves in tropical waters populated with dolphins, tortoises and countless varieties of fish.
 
Maui vacation condos offer a luxury alternative to even the nicest resort hotels.
