Fuels which are finite and consumed over time of usage like fossil fuels and nuclear power are non-renewable resources. Thermodynamics in general is a study of relationships between heat, energy, work and its continuous cycles. It will be discussed further to know more on the basic foundations. Heat engines are the secret behind thermodynamic power cycle supplying most of the world’s electric supply. Carnot cycle, Brayton cycle, Otto cycle and Diesel Cycle are the basic power cycles that will also be discussed further on the course. The ideal, simple and basic power cycles cycle such as the Carnot, Brayton, Otto, and Diesel cycles will be tackled in details as the module progresses.
Simple mathematical approach is applied to different efficiency derivations. Thus, making it easier to understand and comprehend major performance trends of thermal efficiency, specific power output, combustion products, and etc. Pressure and temperature is also presented in how they are related when it comes to technical performance of different power cycle components or processes. The relevance of pressure and temperature is present as the function of the Mach Number. Thus, the compressible flow of T – s diagrams and major performance trends including stagnation over static temperature and pressure are plotted.
