Do you know that US residents devote about 90 percent of their day indoors, according to estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency? And inside air quality can be substantially worse than outdoor, because inside air has pollutants such as chemical substances, microscopic particles, bacteria and mould spores. These pollutants can trigger allergic reactions and affect the health of your workers.

The question is: what function does your carpet play in air quality? When individuals experience hypersensitive symptoms, they tend to blame the carpet – but the reality is that these pollutants aren’t developed by your carpet. In reality, the carpet actually aids to trap the particles and hold them out of the air. The chemical compounds, referred to as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), come from resources similar to building materials, HVAC systems, furniture, cleansing products, and even cooking.

Whether or not you’re talking about new carpet or existing carpet that’s being maintained by commercial carpet cleaning, building owners and tenants have heard tales about toxic carpet odors … but in reality, these stories have turned out to be genuine hype. 

Research by the EPA, various government agencies, and Cornell University have observed that the chemical emissions from new carpet are quite low in contrast to other materials – and they vanish inside a few days. Items such as paint, wall coverings, and other floor coverings release VOC levels up to 10 times larger than carpet, and they can linger for weeks or months. There is no evidence based on credible science or medicine that shows VOCs from new carpet trigger unfavorable health effects.

That suggests that the health issues we may have attributed to carpet are considerably more likely to have been brought on by things like poor ventilation, fungi, bacteria, and large accumulations of dirt and mold in an air flow system.  It may take some detective work to figure out the exact cause, but in the long run, it will enhance the inside environment.

It’s important for building proprietors to understand that their floor coverings are not poisonous – and that carpet taken care of with a normal commercial carpet maintenance plan can actually lead to happier, healthier workers.
