Africa Safari – Amboseli

An African Safari wouldn’t be complete without taking time to visit Amboseli.

Amboseli National Park provides one of the most classic and breathtaking vistas of Kenya, with Mount Kilimanjaro (in Tanzania) as the back drop. At 18,652 feet above sea level, Kilimanjaro rules the flatlands like a potent god ruling the countryside from his white-capped throne. In fact, old Swahili and Arab legends speak of a magnificent inland mountain with a evil god dwelling at the top. As punishment for anyone daring to approach his throne, he would paralyze their feet and hands. Interesting how people of tropical regions described getting frozen. Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania but the most impressive view is from the National Park at Amboselli.

Amboseli gets an abundant amount of water year round, but it’s just flowing in an aquifer. The snows of Kilimanjaro melt, soaking into the porous subsoil layers of volcanic rocks. These underground streams percolate to the surface forming two clear springs in the center of the park. Water also flows at many other points in the park creating large wetlands like the Loginya Swamp. These marshes and swamps have become private watering holes for elephants, hippos and buffaloes.

Several Kenyan Safaris go to Amboseli. So when you’re choosing a photo safari, you must also consider other features of the trip, such as number of people per vehicle, lodging and accommodations, and price.
