Acne is no fun and either is the misinformation and myths that accompany it. See the 10 most common myths here, dispel these and you are on your way to clearer skin

What we think we know about acne is steadily being replaced by what scientists are learning. .
Meanwhile, many myths continue to circulate and endure. .
This article looks at ways we can clear up these misunderstandings and replace them with the facts. It applies to all acne and will help your back acne treatment.

Myth #1: Acne affects nothing but appearance.
Acne can also cause deep psychological distress. Serious acne can lead to depression and low self esteem. Severe acne can often leave people vunerable and prone to withrdawal and social isolation.

Myth #2: Poor hygeine is the main cause of acne – while this may be a facotre it is not the whole story. The combination of oil and dead cells which produce acne is found beneath the skin’s surface where it is difficult to clean it away. Keeping your skin healthy and acne free is possible by cleansing with warm water and soap. Scrubbing too hard may worsen acne .

Myth #3: Acne is caused by specific foods
. Chocolate has long had a reputation as a pimple producer.   Studies have shown no scientific evidence that this is true . This myth is also false for foods like chips and sugar. There are some foods that do seem to aggravate (not cause) the condition: milk and foods high in iodine, such as seafood.

Myth #4: Acne has to run its course
. Many acne treatments have been shown to work extremelly well and these should be used under medical advice.

Myth #5: Use as much medication as you can lay your hands on. Many people turn to medication as the first step and increase the dose as they get more acne. Large doses of any medication are bad for you and so this is not reccommended. Excess use of acne ointments may just irritate the skin further .

Myth #6: Sunbathing is good for acne. Acne can be improved in the short term by exposure to the sun (it dries out oil in the skin. However, long-term the skin adapts and the acne is unfazed This will not work in the long term though. Increasing your exposure to sunlight can have devasting effects on your skin, including skin cancer, and so it is really not worth the risk. Myth #7: Slapping on the makeup will keep your acne at bay.
Some makeup products can clog the pores, which is bad for the health of your skin . Cosmetics that are labeled “noncomedogenic” or “nonacnegenic” are safe to use. Some cosmetics contain active ingredients to fight acne.

Myth #8: Acne is only a teenage condition
. Many adults get acne, just as many teens do. Acne is often gone, for the lucky ones, by a persons early 20s. But some people experience acne for the first time as late as their 40s . Some people never get rid of acne and experiece it their whole lives.

Myth #9: Acne is related to sex . Some people would like you to believe that either too much, or too little, sex can lead to acne. No scientific evidence exists for this at all. There is a link between sexual activity and hormone production, but the relationship between sex and the production of sebum (the oily substance which combines with dead skin cells to cause acne) is not known. Stress can affect hormones and hence acne as can anger.

Myth #10: Popping pimples is the best way to get rid of them
. This could actually cause the opposite effect and make them worse because you might spread the pimple causing bacteria. Popping can also lead to eventual scarring, which in severe cases, can be permanent . The only option then is an acne laser treatement.
