You’ve thought about getting a tattoo and decided it should be your girlfriend/boyfriend’s name. Stop right there! Try to choose a better tattoo that you won’t regret in the end.
Yes, you love your boyfriend, but maybe you should first consider what you’re doing. Tattoos are not temporary. They already hurt going on, it’s worse if they’re to come off.
If you’re serious about getting a tattoo, make sure that what you’re having inked into your skin for pretty much eternity is something you’ll be happy about forty years from now. Ask yourself the following questions when you consider which tattoo design to get.
Why am I getting a tattoo in the first place? Is it self-expression, marking an important life milestone or turning point, paying tribute to an important element in your life (perhaps your love of antique cars or cats)?
Maybe you want the person you love to see how you feel for them in a permanent way. A lot of people think it’s fine to tattoo the names of your children, grandchildren, etc. But tattooing the name of your true love isn’t a good idea because you never know how the relationship would turn out.
If you’re getting a tattoo because all of your friends are doing it, please reconsider. It’s better to get a tattoo because you want one. If you want a challenge or something different and you’ve decided to get a tattoo, that’s also fine. But carefully choose your design.
What do I love now that I am absolutely certain I will love in forty or fifty years? You’re probably good if you’ve loved something since you were a kid, like cats or antique cars. You’re safe if you have kids or grandkids and want their names on your skin. If you feel connected to Asian culture and you want a Chinese dragon, you probably won’t regret it. It’s also okay to have a tattoo of the Olympic Symbol if you’re an athlete. You’re probably getting the picture. Go ahead and try to get a tattoo that’s insanely cool and let everyone else marvel at it.
But here’s an important note – our interests and passions change with time. Maybe you got a tattoo several years ago and it no longer carries the same meaning as it did when it was new. That’s okay, as long as you still feel good about what it meant at the time.
Finally, ask yourself, “Am I going to be embarrassed when I explain this to my grandkids, parents or the curious neighbor down the street?” Try to rethink your decision if you feel you might be embarrassed about your tattoo.
Go on and look for ideas. There are books full of flash in all tattoo shops. Flash is referred to tattoo designs. You can look through tattoo magazines, art magazines, or come up with something on your own.
Many good artists can take your rudimentary ideas and use their artistic skills to draw something that is uniquely yours. Just remember when choosing your design to ask, “What am I trying to express? Why do I want to get a tattoo? What are things I find important? You’ll find the perfect design as long as you ask these questions.
