The life of a digital camera’s batteries can be a problem for many, due to the many features now found in these cameras. In fact, batteries may be the biggest digital camera-related expense, but there are ways in which you can conserve your battery’s life. Let’s start with the three biggest sources of power drain.

Nothing drains power more than the LCD screen. It is possible to turn this feature off unless you really feel the need for it. Use the viewfinder instead. The flash is another main reason for batteries having a short lifespan.

Whenever you can, use natural lighting to take your photos and turn off the flash. This will help save your battery for times when you absolutely need the flash. A third drain on your battery is constantly using your zoom. It can be very taxing on a camera’s battery to keep zooming it in and out. It’s always best to stick to a position where you are most comfortable with.

Here are some other tips on how to extend your battery’s life.

If you’re not using your camera, leave it off, or if you should leave it on, use Power Saving mode.

Since the cold can take its toll on a battery, keep your batteries and the camera in a warm place in case of cold weather. The cold drains batteries very quickly.

Store batteries in a cool, dry location away from sunlight and other heat sources.

Avoid unnecessary playback of your already taken images. Be decisive when taking pictures, and know when you should delete a picture or keep it ? then you can review them once downloaded to your computer.

Use the AC adapter. Most digital cameras have an adapter that allows you to plug directly into a power point. If you don’t plan on moving around a lot and are near an outlet, the AC adapter will increase the life of your batteries.

Take note of these tips and you wouldn’t need to replace your camera’s batteries so frequently, thus guaranteeing longer life and less expenses for replacement batteries.
