The coalition government has pledged to stop businesses going to extraordinary lengths in order to meet health and safety legal requirements and to bring back public confidence to the sector.
When the economy has been through very challenging times, it is crucial that when stability returns as it has, businesses can take advantage of fresh opportunities. Despite this it is also essential that businesses which function in doubtless dangerous environments never lose sight of health and safety legislation.
Prime Minister, David Cameron has pledged to sort out a “damaging” compensation culture and he called for an end to “senseless” regulations. Some may well claim that just as American investment banks came to London, the American compensation culture is finding its way to our shores.
He said a review completed by former Conservative minister Lord Young could act as a “turning point” as Lord Young said the status of health and safety in the eyes of the general population had never been lower.
In a foreword to Lord Young’s report, the Prime minister said the government would minimize marketing activities carried out by irresponsible claims and management companies which only nourish the compensation culture.
A few of these legal firms, which do not represent the whole industry, have used disreputable methods to get buyers and tarnished the sector. Additionally the advertising by some of these companies is painful to watch and highly misleading.
The PM said: “We’re going to focus regulations where they are most needed, with a new system that is proportionate, not bureaucratic, that treats adults like adults, and reinstates some common sense and trust.”
Nevertheless there were grumbles that the report did very little in the way of recommendations to reduce the high levels of workplace injury, illness and death, however the overwhelming bulk of business groups including many law firms welcomed the review and what came out of it.
Lord Young went on to say that there was a “growing fear” in the business community that they will have no choice but to pay compensation for even the most outlandish of claims. In addition he said that the system for claiming compensation was a growing industry but one that needs serious thought and reform.
