How a water filtration system works largely depends on the kind of pond pumps that it uses. So if you are going to use a filter of some type in your garden pond, then you need to choose the best pump for that particular system.

There are two main types of fish pond pumps; those that are submersible and those that are housed out of, but near to the pond.

Submersible pumps are often used to generate fountains and other relatively small water features within the pond. A lot of times, submersible pumps are also employed for re-circulating water so that a waterfall effect can be created. They are easy to install and to operate and don’t have to , be primed. Although it is not a filter, almost all pumps have a strainer towards the inlet side so that fish and debris can be prevented from getting stucked in the moving parts.

As compared to submersible pumps, and external surface pump is larger, more powerful and expensive. Such type are solar pond pumps.

In case you need to pump water to a distance for creating an extensive waterfall or a stream, then you will require a surface pump.

The pump that you choose for the pond should be capable enough to handle the volume of water that is present on along with being compatible with a filter that is used. You can find out that capacity of pump in litres or gallons per hour by using a suitable gauge.

This terminology can be confusing for people who don’t know much about pumps and have just been starting in Landscaping Calgary. But all it means is the height (or distance) from the surface of the water that the equipment can pump the water. The pump will only be able to handle water till a specified height after which the output of water will be zero. You can also come to know of the water pressure that equipment can provide. But remember that other factors including the length of pipe-work used and inadequate maintenance will affect output once the pump is in use.

Suppose you required the pump to power a water fountain, you will have to consider water spurting effect as well. The larger is the head, the high amount of water will be able to spray the air.
