The London Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event that takes place on the Sunday and Monday of the late August Bank holiday. At the start of it’s birth, back in 1959, the Carnival has grown to become the second largest street gathering in the world, with its busiest ever weekend figures approaching some 2 million people.
The Festival was actually born as an idea to try and improve current black and white racial disagreements, at the same time as lifting moral for the Caribbean migrants of the period, which was at an all time low point in light of the recent race riots that had taken place barely a year before. For a number of years the event was held mainly inside, however as it grew in popularity and thanks in part to the London Free School the event hit the streets of Notting Hill for the first time in 1966.
Up until 1976, the Carnival had already swollen in figures to something like 160,000 visitors, nonetheless in this unfortunate year and for a few years following there were large riots involving Caribbean young men and the Police, that was brought about having the status of a protest to the aggravation the black residents was under in the area. The problem was appallingly publicised by the press making it seem enormously single sided and as a result the carnival was all but shut down all together, however Prince Charles was one of the forthright figures of the time who helped support it’s very being.
As the years rolled by and relationships amid the community improved the Notting Hill Carnival started to be a much less significant target for problems and the supporting visitor figures began to expand on a truly colossal scale, together with the London establishment actually viewing the event as a method to celebrate London as a diverse multi cultural location.
The Notting Hill Festival in modern times has expanded and pushed into lots of distinctive types of entertainment, with it’s make up inclusive of a glitzy, vibrant float style parade which circles the very middle of the infamous West London region, shared with steel drum group contests and a large number of road based sound systems contributing a broad diversity of music types. As if this was not adequate, the Carnival is entirely laden with an extraordinary amount of food and drink centred stalls helping to make certain the two days of partying remain a truly unforgettable one.
Today, the local based celebration is operated privately, by means of a company named London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, who operate in close collaboration with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to help make sure it’s smooth organization for both the tourists, who arrive from many parts of the Globe, combined with, of course, the local Notting Hill residents.
