A wildfire is any uncontrolled fire in combustible vegetation that occurs in the countryside or a wilderness area. Vegetation varies in different countries and counties and so there are many names for such a fire, for example: brush fire or bushfire, forest or grass fire even hill fire. Wildfires are determined by how they start, how fast they spread, where they are located which is usually in the countryside and how the weather effects it.
Wildfires are recorded on every continent except Antarctica. Found in fossil records and human history, wildfires can occur in periodic intervals. Nature almost uses wildfires to do a clean sweep as the damage caused to both property and human life can be horrendous. There are plant species which depend of the effects of fires for reproduction and growth, however, large wildfires can also have a major negative ecological effect.
The international community continues to study and develop its fire prevention strategies and prevention and detection methods have varied over time. Although controversial, the lighting of smaller controlled fires, to burn off flammable material is thought to be a good method of controlling large areas of forest or countryside. Where cities are encroaching on outer woodland areas and property owners are in search of some peace and tranquility, all too often wildfires destroy homes and property located in these wooded outer suburbs.
Wildfires are more dangerous than people realise. The evidence of this we see almost daily through the summer on the network news programs as parts of the world go up in flames. The very nature of the fire, the changing wind and heat from the sun make this type of fire one of the most unpredictable and dangerous to fight. Every year there are many deaths because of wildfires .
