Many people seem to think that cats are funny. As cats are one of the most popular pets in the world, there are a large number of materials about cats and humor in all forms of media ranging from cat joke books to home made cat videos. The huge interest in cats has even sparked a huge internet culture surrounding cat humor.

The amusement often stems from seeing a cat carry out everyday human activities with comical results. An example is the mundane act of looking into a mirror. When a cat looks into a mirror, a common reaction is to approach the mirror cautiously, and then back away suddenly in fear as their own reflection in the mirror moves. In this case, curiosity does not kill the cat, but instead brings about laughter from their human counterparts. When caught on video, the joke is shared with viewers from all over the world.

Funny videoes are not the only form of cat humor. Recently, photos of cats in a funny pose coupled with a caption have been uploaded by many users. These digitally altered images, known as “lolcat”, often portrays the cat as having human habits or controlling modern technology. The name comes from the internet slang abbreviation “lol”, which means to “laugh out loud”. Internet users would use the abbreviation when they come across something funny.

A sample lolcat could be one where a cat is caught standing in its hind legs and its right front leg stretched up to the right. With a caption, the image editor could give the impression that the cat is a rock and roll star. Sometimes, a picture with a cat in a regular sitting pose would be used, but the key to the humor is coming up with the appropriate caption that suits the image.

The language used for the captions are meant to create humor as well. Parodied off internet slang that is most often riddled with ungrammatical sentences and misspelled words, this language or slang has been named “lolspeak” or “kitty pidgin”. Enthusiasts wishing to learn this slang could find guides easily on the internet.

Some features of the slang include ignoring subject-verb agreement especially in highly used verbs such as “to be”, or using the past tense to mean the present and so on. English syntactic rules are also abandoned as a free word order is utilized to the user’s fancy.

Misspelling is a major part of kitty pidgin. Some ways this has been done is replacing S with Z and importantly, “the” must be spelled as “teh”. Exclamation marks are also added in excess and internet abbreviations could be chained into a single word to add an exaggerated effect.

Funny cat video. have been around for a long time, but lolcat is a recent cultural sensation that has appeared several times in news feature. Other common pets have also been added to the “lol” bandwagon. Books has been inspired by lolcat and even the bible has been translated into lolspeak. The attention cats have managed to garner seems to show a consensus that cats are funny.
