The tattoo designs during those times were adapted from the traditional Japanese woodcuts, picture books and water color paintings. The Japanese subjects would undergo intense pain while being tattooed with the end result of having a exceptional piece of art stamped on their body for life. Japanese tattoo art has continued to be unrivalled success and is a widely used art form today .

The lessening of the  feudal system when the Edo period was nearing its end led to the rise of Japanese commoners who developed a unique culture. The common people stopped adhering to the traditional moral rules and ethics and started doing what they considered right for them. The new habit of commoners therefore used tattoo art as a way of self expression.
