Best Film Schools to Choose From

All schools can offer many different things. That’s why schools have varying identities and characteristics. You will probably hear in some conversations that the school is sometimes blamed for the type of image an individual portrays in public. For instance the statement: “Well, he is like that since he came from the So and So University. All the students who graduated from that school are just like that.” And this interference is not without logic. That particular culture and characteristic in a certain school is often caused by peer pressure.

So, determining the best film school is easy. The answer remains to be: It all depends on what you want to achieve in your film school experience. Each film school has its specific attributes and features that the best thing to do is to figure them out first. The country where this school is located plays an important role in knowing the personality of a specific film school.

There are several aspects to consider: the kind of courses offering, the length of time each subject is discussed, the number of written modules against the time of actual practice, the incorporators of college and the course itself, guests in key lecture forums, the reputation of the school and whether that really matters in the end of the course. I believe it always does. It helps how you move in the world, whether up or down. However, in the real film industry, degrees are not that valuable and what weighs more is track record and past experience. No amount of argument can win against track record and innate talent. A few examples of schools of impeccable status and reputation are:

American Film Institute

New York University

California State of the Arts

University of Southern California

University of California – Los Angeles

Away from the United States, there are two notable film schools that one interested can opt for and these are the Australian Film, Television, and Radio School and the United Kingdom’s National Film and Television School. This is not to belittle the capacity of other international schools in teaching the art of filmmaking but rest assured that there are those that may be at par with the capacity of these aforementioned schools. What one needs to do is in depth research on what he really wants to be in the film industry, what culture he wants to inculcate on himself, and where can he be comfortable with.
