VBS Decorating Ideas

I just finished helping my church put on our own VBS. None of the packaged VBS kits have worked well for us, and we’re a tiny church so the expense doesn’t really make much sense, either. Instead we come up with our own versions. It’s simple enough to come up with games that the kids can have fun playing during recreation time, and you can instill a lesson in almost any type of game. Bible lessons are also something we’re used to coming up with on our own, so that part’s not difficult either. You just need to have an imagination to make them fun. We tend to skip the skits, since somebody would have to write them, but we show educational, fun movies or shows instead, like Veggie Tales or whatnot. The hardest part of coming up with our own program has been decorations and scenery for the camp. I really believe having fun, copious decorations is essential for VBS, since it makes the kids feel like they’re somewhere special and helps to create the right atmosphere. This year I was in charge of decorating, and I was struck with an utterly brilliant idea: shower curtains.

My friend owns a company that sells shower curtains online. I was helping her to upload many of her products to her website at around the same time I was planning for VBS. This year’s VBS was Little House on the Prairie-themed, and when I saw Susan’s choice of country shower curtains I realized they’d provide absolutely perfect scenery for many of the schoolroom walls. In fact, her surf shower curtains would have been ideal for last year’s Rafting Adventure VBS. Not only can you use the curtains whole as wall decorations, but you can cut out pieces from them to use separately. Also, they’ll last practically forever. We can store the decorations in the church cellar until we run another VBS for which they’d be useful.

I feel like I may have solved our VBS decoration quandary for good. I’d urge using shower curtains to everyone. Of course, it worked out great for me having a friend who sold them–she simply donated the items I wanted to the cause. But really, shower curtains are a comparatively cheap, long-term solution to the problem. If you’re running a VBS, think about either buying them cheap online, or asking people to donate them. You’ll find that you’ll soon have a collection of scenery that you can use over and over again and won’t have to worry about it in future.
