Should America Be Changed Or Restored?

Today in our nation’s capital, Glen Beck held his Restoring Honor to America rally .  There will be all kinds of commentary on this rally , but it was definitely a huge event, drawing much attention from the left and the right .  Many people were upste because the rally fell on the same date as MLK’s “I have a dream” speech .  Beck has claimed that the event was not purposefully planned around this anniversary , but it happened none the less .  There has been much opposition to the rally because of the selected date.  Several people, including Al Sharpton, were very upset about the rally being held on this date .

To me, it’s not that big of a deal .  If anything, it brings more attention to that amazing speech of Dr. Martin Luther King and allows people to compare that message to the message that Beck is trying to get across .  What is interesting is that when you boil it down, the messages are very similar .  That is to say, both believe that religion and politics work very closely together and that Americans should abide by the principles of the Bible in order to achieve the best lives as citizens .  While 50 years ago, it seemed everyone had an opinion on the issue , today most people will say what’s right for you is right for you .

There is no doubt that the large majority of Beck fans are Tea Party activists, fed up with the government .  Looking out into the crowd of thousands, you see several military veterans with their flags, hats and military rings.  When Sarah Palin got up to speak , she said that she was not there to speak as a politician, but as something greater, a mother of a combat vet.  She would probably enjoy shopping for a custom military ring as well.  Sara Palin’s followers are loyal and love everything she says .  The broad base of Beck’s followers are conservatives, many of whom are active in the Tea Party.  I don’t watch Beck’s show on a consistent basis , mainly because there is too much emotion involved for me .  He seems to use it to his advantage as well .  Don’t get me wrong , issues such as religion, the military, the constitution, and the state of our economy our highly emotional subjects, but Beck seems to continually try to win some kind of sympathetic audience .  It seems off to me .  The other thing that I didn’t realize until the other day was that Beck is a mormon .  I have heard him share beliefs about Christianity for some time, but had never known that he was a mormon.  Although if you asked a mormon , they would tell you different, but the two religions are not at all the same .  The fact that I’ve never heard Beck say that he is a mormon also does not sit right with me.

Overall, I don’t want to say all negative things .  I think it’s amazing when people get out and support what they believe in .  The overall message of “Restoring America” seems like a good message to me .  If you contrast that message with the “change” we’ve seen from the current regime , I think I would choose restoration.  No matter what you think of Beck, at least he makes you deal with the issue of religion and politics, and I believe that is a good thing .
