There is little doubt that vintage oil paintings are appealing to certain individuals especially collectors of fine art. In general, folks value all vintage things like furnishings, collector’s items, and artwork. Have you ever wondered why?
For some reason, people find old stuff fascinating. Antiques or old things assist us in relating with things that occurred before that we weren’t part of. Whatever the case is, it seems that all of us have one thing in common involving us to the earlier period.
That’s the place and the time when our ancestors lived. We wish to know more with reference to what occurred in history. History textbooks can provide us a little explanation of it but works, particularly antique oil works, give us a very concrete bond with this past.
That may be very exciting in itself, however there is more to it than historical connections. Oil works are completed by well-known master painters that will forever be remembered in history. Seeing oil work from the very best masters is something out of the ordinary. Even ordinary people living throughout the time period of the master artist may not have been given the privilege to view the oil paintings themselves.
Such artworks would have been commissioned solely by members of the royal family and the privileged upper class in society who would have had the money to pay for them. Once accomplished by the artists, the paintings would have been proudly displayed in the palaces and grand manors and other unique locations where only those ‘worthy’ of viewing them would ever get the prospect to do so.
Most of these works held secrets not known to the public. One well-known secret that everyone continues to be talking about nowadays is the Mona Lisa’s mystifying smile.. Even at this time, there are still debates whether or not Mona Lisa was really a woman or a man. Who and what was Leonardo da Vinci actually trying to paint?
Different famous antique paintings have much more dramatic and contentious tales surrounding them. Whose hand is it that seems to be approaching from nowhere apparent in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous ‘The Last Supper’? Did it belong to John or Mary Magdalene? If the latter, what was she doing among the many disciples? Had Christ made her one of the twelve?
After all, nearly all paintings did appear in public and without controversy. The works with probably the most secrets became more famous and precious in time, perhaps in part owing to the secrets that pleased people’s imaginations up to now. Might this have been an intentional strategy on the a part of the artists and those that handled and promoted them? It’s indeed a query worth asking.
These days, you are likely to find old oil paintings properly guarded in state art museums, halls as well as galleries where anybody could go to see them. A few of these galleries include the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum in New York along with the British Museum in London. There are also a few stored by personal collectors only for their own private viewing and not meant for the general public.
