The Isle of Skye is the ideal holiday destination for walkers and water sports enthusiasts. Found amongst a group of islands known as the Inner Hebrides a holiday on Skye is a unique experience. Many tourists visit the Scottish Highlands to see the spectacular scenery and many readily agree that the Inner Hebrides have the finest and most majestic. In the article below I take a look at some of the factors which make Skye is such a great place to take a break .
Places To Visit On Skye
Although it is not on the island no visit would be entirely complete without having a visit to Eilean Donan Castle. One of Scotland’s most photographed monuments the castle has also starred in numerous blockbusters an example being the 1985 cult classic “Highlander”. The castle is privately owned but, for an entrance fee, you are allowed to meander around the well equipped castle or have a guided tour. The castle is only 15 minutes from the Skye Bridge.
The only real mountain range in Britain is The Cuillin which provide a fantastic range of opportunities for mountain climbing . In total the rough and ready Black Cuillins has twelve munros with Sgurr Alasdair being the highest at 992 m (3,255 ft).
The Isle of Skye only has two Corbetts (Glamaig is the highest) and both are located in the Red Hills. The Black Cuillin are bare rock at their tops whereas the Red Hills (often incorrectly named the Red Cuillin) are much softer with vegetation to the tops.
If you want to indulge in climbing please seek professional advice as it can often be immensely dangerous, especially if you are ill equipped. Too many people end up in difficulties after a quick shift in the weather, always be prepared for the worst. You can access the Black Cuillin from Glen Brittle and the Red Hills from Glen Sligachan.
Skye attractions are the Glendale Toy Museum, the Talisker distillery, Colbost Croft Museum, Giant Macaskill Museum, Bright Water Visitor Centre, Skye Museum of Island Life, Armadale Castle Gardens and Museum of the Isles and Dunvegan Castle. The stronghold of the Macleods of Dunvegan and Harris, Dunvegan Castle, is dramatically situated upon a cliff-top. The Isle of Skye has a mild climate and is much greener than most other islands in Scotland and this is made abundantly clear in the fantastic gardens of the castle , you will also discover a restaurant and craft shop making it ideal for a day out.
Looking over to the Isle of Raasay, Broadford is a seaside village which features some much needed facilities but is also rather nice place to spend a couple of hours. The area has some splendid sea views however the first port of call should be the rather small , but immensely fascinating , Skye Serpentarium Reptile World where visitors can get thrilled by some hands on experience!
Skye hotels appear almost everywhere and it is pretty easy to find one however finding one with vacancies is another story altogether. It is important to remember that it is a good idea to make your bookings as early as possible when doing so please take a look at our listings of Isle of Skye hotel accommodation .
