Those of us who live in the UK are probably watching the BP oil spill with fascination and worry about how it will affect the environment. Even though the oil spill is not close enough to cause any immediate damage to the UK, it can often happen these days that one part of the world is quickly affected by something that is happening elsewhere in the world. That is why many people are asking of the BP oil disaster will cause heating oil costs in the UK to rise. Most of us will be aware of how the bad weather last winter caused a huge demand for oil and with it, increased costs. So many are wondering what will happen this year if combined with the BP disaster, we have another really cold winter.

Not everyone is aware that derivatives of crude oil such as heating oil will rise in price too if crude oil goes up – when you actually stop to think about this, it starts to make sense. Crude oil prices are already affected because of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and unless things are sorted out soon, it could get worse. There is also the possibility that the mounting pressure that is now on BP could cause the company to collapse and if this happened share prices would plummet; who knows what would happen to the price of heating oil then.

This most recent disaster has just brought to light how small this planet we live on really is. Hopefully things will be sorted out soon and we won’t be forced to face even higher heating oil prices this year. Things got so bad in 2009 that pensioners were forced to choose between heating or food; a shameful state of affairs. So getting this situation rectified as soon as possible is not only essential for the people in America who have been affected but it is just as important to us here who do not want to have to pay higher prices for our heating oil .

Some people spend a lot of money heating their homes in the winter. Electricity and gas prices are very high and show no signs of coming down any time soon.
