Blues piano chords are actually very simple in theory. This genre of music is part of our American heritage. It is simple folk music originated in the United States and remains very popular today. The use of the seventh note of the scale is what distinguishes this type from other forms of folk music.

This style of music is very obviously an influence in the old rock and roll and has carried into the popular music of today. To approach this genre is a simple manipulation of the scales. It revolves around removing or adding the minor fifth, seventh and third tones of the scale. It seems to be simple in design and it is.

Simply start with your favorite minor scale. Now just play the one, three, five, seven on both hands. Then alternate the fingering to achieve the fat sound that you desire. The more you play with it, the more you will create, and the bluesier it will sound.

The best of these experiments are found in C major with an A minor. A minor is really a C major chord with an A in it. This works in any key with the root chord and its relative minor. Now add a flat third, which is E flat, the flat fifth or a G flat and you get C diminished.

Roll off this chord and strike quickly on the white keys E and G. This creates a major minor groove. It is often played as a hammer on and pull off by guitarists. This may sound like it is easier said than done. However by practicing twenty minutes a day, within a few weeks you will get the hang of this method quickly.

By altering the fingering of both hands and the experimental use of major chords with their minor cousins, called relative minors, you can achieve some strikingly original sounding blues. Just open your mind and use your imagination. In other words by using major and minor chords together, you can achieve some very bluesy sounds.

Try this technique. The term used for this technique is rolling over from major to minor. Basic piano knowledge is required for this exercise. Starting with the minor chord, rock your hand like a board over a log. Roll off the minor chord to the major by changing the third tone. This is a very distinctive sound and is a simple technique. A study of the minor sevenths and their connection to the major tonic is the easiest way to learn blues piano chords.
