Among the hundreds of music festivals in CE Europe, the festival called Sziget is the biggest, being held every August in Budapest, Hungary. Sziget is organized on small island close to the centre of Budapest, but still in a distance from houses, in a way that residents are not frustrated by the level of noise. Part of the Obuda Island used to be a ship construction factory, while the other side, where the festival takes place is a popular excursion spot.

Sziget Festival was first held in the early 90s. In the early years almost only local artists performed for an audience of some thousand. The event was initially called Student Island, although nowadays it’ easy to find entertainment for both young and old.

It was originally established for Hungarian students, however nowadays a huge number of festival guests arrive from foreign countries, especially from France, the Netherlands and the neighbouring countries. It is possible for them to live in a tent on the Island, however many decide to reserve apartments in the centre of Budapest, which could be somewhat more beneficial.

Today, the music show is organized under the name of Sziget Festival and hosts nearly 400000 visitors every year. Regularly, the the festival lasts one week. In the the last couple of years the starting day – called day zero – is mainly dominated by local performers, however the following days are totally open.

The well-known bands perform on the central stage, these groups are in general either popular names from today’s music landscape like Muse or The Hives, or artists who are on the top since a long time like Iron Maiden or REM. There are of course countless other places, where different kind of music is played, these are world music or metal, and so on. There are 5-6 larger stages and approximately 30-40 various points that offer various types of parties and activities, and last but not least a large number of pubs, canteens and a lot more.
