Learning proper piano techniques is absolutely necessary if you plan on becoming an accomplished pianist. While many individuals are able to learn how to play on their own, they might be making mistakes in the process. Developing bad habits is something that must be avoided in order to avoid injuries and other problems down the line.

The truth of the matter is it can be quite detrimental if you learn improper techniques early on. If you establish bad habits such as poor posture while learning, this can lead to irreversible injuries and playing habits later on in life. This is the most common problem resulting from learning how to play on your own rather than going a more traditional route.

The way you sit and place your hands on the piano are two of the most important things to consider when developing good playing methods. You should always be keeping your posture in mind. When playing you should never be experiencing any pain and should always be able to move freely and fluidly.

Another important consideration to make is your hands. The proper hand position is known by many as a paw or claw due to the shape the knuckles make when slightly raised up. This position is also commonly referred to as a bridge. However, your knuckles should not be raised too high, they should for the most part remain flat.

Another consideration to make is the position of your elbows in relation to the piano and your hands. Line your wrists up with your elbows allow your wrists to be flush with your forearms and hands. This means that your wrists, forearms, and elbows should be approximately at the level of the white keys.

Be careful that you do not get too ahead of yourself when trying to advance through lessons that may be above the skill level your currently capable of. It is necessary to take things one step at a time and not take on more than you can handle. Attempting hard lessons when you just start learning may make things much more frustrating and or boring than they really need to be.

Your left hand will inevitably become something that is hard to master, if you are right handed. Of course left handed players will also have difficulty with their right hand. Luckily you will be able to find lessons that allow you to increase the proficiency of which ever hand is lacking. Players that do not address this issue will inevitably experience problems down the line and ultimately regret it when trying to learn proper piano techniques.
