Why Is The Budget Announced on A Tuesday?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer assembles a solitary report from a series of financial and economic paperworkwhich end up  as ‘The Budget.’    Amendments relating to anything from tax dollars spent to tax rates is dealt with preceding to the release. After the annoucement and with a lotdeliberation the ‘Budget Resolutions’ are given; this generally takes a few days, well four to be exact.   These are defined as “the basic parts of the Budget that renew taxes”.  Policies that address education, health, defence and other important sectors are also debated.

 

A Bit of The Budget Trivia:

The longest Budget speech was made on April 18, 1853 by William Gladstone.  It lasted a remarkable four hours and forty five minutes.

 

The Budget box is also commonly referred to as the “Gladstone box” and at one time carried the speech from Number 11 to the House.   This happened for over a century and took place every year.  The hand carved wooden box is covered with red leather which is now very much weathered and is lined with an inky black satin. The box was used for the first time over a 150 years ago and was initially used by William Gladstone, hence the name.  Due to the weathered state of the box it was officially retired in 2010. The National Archives inspired its retirement because of fears of continued use destroying it in its entirety.   It has been replaced with yet anothersimilar box which will certainly become historical as well and thousands of accountant services witness its place in this historical annual event.

The Budget is usually delivered on a Tuesday, which provides the rest of the week for the arguments and debates to take place.   The 2011 Budget however, is being held on a Wednesday, although Tuesday has been the tradition for many many years.
