Biological filter media series is any media that can be used to house as much beneficial bacteria as possible. Much desired is absorptive medium for the sole reason it lets a lot of helpful bacteria per square inch. Look into the surface area if you’re going to have a good biological filter. So what are the different kinds of filter that would be nice for your fish tank?
Absorptive ceramic cylinders
For a great biological media in your aquarium filter, you can choose and add ceramic cylinders. One cylinder averages around 3/8″ x 3/8″. Usually put in media bags and piled in the undermost layer in the aquarium filter nearest to the top. Ceramic cylinders offers the best surface area for beneficial bacteria to thrive and grow while at the same time allowing a much greater water flow.
Silicate Bio-Glass
Bio-glass is pretty much the same as the porous ceramic cylinders. With the shape of very deep cylinder, the bio-glass is usually made from natural silicate compound. Most often kept in media bags and kept as the last layer in your aquarium filter closest to the top. Observe how you will have a much nicer water flow when you have a bio-glass, in addition, helpful bacteria grows and thrives too.
Friendly Bio-Balls
Bio-Balls are specially designed balls that are made to fit into your filter and house the much-needed beneficial bacteria colonies. One gallon of bio-balls would equal around 21 square feet of surface area. Integrates nicely in canister filters or even if it’s wet or dry.
Quartz Bio Media
The quartz biological spheres comes from natural lava rocks. Allows for great water flow while housing the much needed beneficial bacteria. It should stored in filter media bags of the fish tank. You can use it in most aquarium filter.
Polymer Biological Stars
The biological stars comes in polymer stuff and its in the shape of a star fish. Provides excellent surface area to build up your beneficial bacteria. You will have around 20 gallons if you have four stars.
Eheim Ehfisubstrat PRO
Ehfisubstrat is a sintered glass that offers a huge surface area of nearly 19,000 square feet per gallon. It’s specifically designed to shelter helpful bacteria. This can be placed in a lot of aquarium filters. Can be added to aquarium filter media bags.
Replacing Biological Media
You need not worry how oftimes you have to change the biological filter media designs in your fish tank. Well, you might not replace it after all! As long as the filter media is in good shape, and you are able to clean it, you should be OK. A lot of bio-filter media can be re-used and needs merely to be cleaned.
Washing Biological Media
When do you actually clean biological filter media? Wash your filter media when you see some detritus( fish waste) scattering or if there’s a noticeable moderate water flow.
You can cleanse your bio-filter media by directly placing the mechanical filter under running water, but it’s advised that you should not. Biological media needs to be washed out in a bucket of aquarium water. When you rinse your biological media out under a sink faucet, the chlorine will kill beneficial bacteria you possess. Killing beneficial bacterial will lead to potential problems and possibly a mini-cycle. Just regularly soak the bio-filter media in a pail of water from your aquarium.
