For some people, the idea of learning the guitar is scary one. It seems as though there is more to take in than anyone could ever find the time for. Various new skills need to be learnt, and this can turn a lot of people off completely, as they feel it would be just too hard. In fact, it’s nowhere near as hard to learn to play the guitar as many people seem to believe, provided you have the right help. In this article I’d like to talk about the more common issues people may have when they decide to start learning the guitar, and make you see that it’s not as hard as you might first think.
There are countless reasons why people choose to learn the guitar. For some people, it is a career in music they’re after. Many people dream of writing they own, original songs. Others simply want to be able to play their favourite tunes at home. But it really doesn’t matter what your reasons are, what matters most is that you find learning the guitar enjoyable and fulfilling – I’m quite sure you will!.
The very first thing you need to decide is weather to play acoustic or electric guitar. It’s largely up to you, although the style of music you’d like to learn might have a lot to do with it. Electric guitars can be a bit easier to play than acoustics because of their lighter strings, but they do require additional equipment, like leads and an amp. Acoustics have the advantage of being able to be played, and heard anywhere.
Once you’ve got a guitar, you can either get lessons from a professional tutor, or teach yourself using books, videos, or other resources. If you enlist the help of a tutor it will obviously be more costly than learning on your own, but you will have somebody to show you exactly what to do. It’s less expensive to teach yourself, but there are dangers when doing this, such as learning things incorrectly, and developing bad playing habits.
Regardless of whether you chose to take lessons or go it alone, you’ll probably begin by learning how to play chords.A chord is two or more notes played at the same time, and a lot of guitar music is just strumming chords. Once you get the hang of changing chords, and strumming in time, you’ll be amazed how quickly you can learn new songs, and how fantastic you sound.
The most vital thing, if you want to be a good player, is practice. But that’s not as simple as it sounds. If you don’t follow the correct practice methods you will not progress as quickly as you should. When you practise, you should aim to play things slowly, but perfectly. You should always use a metronome to ensure that you are playing in time.
That concludes this article. I hope you’ve found it informative, and maybe it’s inspired you to get practising.
