Whether you’re going to have a simple water garden or a fish lagoon, a koi pond filter system is an essential part you shouldn’t take for granted.   These types of garden apparatus comes in many configurations, often determined by its cost and intricacy.   You will need an aerator, a pump and a koi pond filter in your fish shoal.   These devices can be installed at different positions within or outside the pond, depending on the type chosen, and each has their own advantages and disadvantages.

Look into the uncomplicated koi pond filter arrangement  type like a basket filter.  Whatever the design, these types can be positioned above the water surface or even underwater.   The pond filter operate by pushing the water through a net which then catches substantial wastes before returning the water to the pond.   You need these filters for your pond.  There are various types of garden pond filters available which can remove debris of greater or smaller sizes.   Scour the basket filter every now and then to avoid the occurrence of clogging.   Ask the device manufacturer for the proper cleaning schedule of your pond filter.

A UV filter is one of the more advanced types of pond filters on the market.  This garden pond filter prove that the old axiom “sunlight is the best disinfectant” is essentially true.   More specifically, it is the UV radiation in sunlight that kills algae and microorganisms so efficiently.

These pond filters expose quantities of the water to a powerful UV light that destroys microorganisms and algae which pose a hazard to fish.   This type of pond filter does require cleaning.   After some time, you will have to take out the UV bulb housing for it may be encrusted with some grime, so you can ensure that the maximum possible amount of UV rays goes to the water which travels to the pump.   Small amounts of water would go in these pumps at some point.   They would be a great embellishment for your garden pond but they can’t necessarily handle quantities of water that can sufficiently provide safe water in the whole pond.

Bacterial garden pond filter on the other hand uses good live organisms to purify the water from algae which preys on the fish and pond occupants.   The pumps need to be primed with good bacteria before it can really clean the water in the garden pond.   Usually, they are re-primed frequently during the first few weeks of use, according to the manufacturer’s instructions and then at longer intervals thereafter.   Bacterial filters works best against algae and other “pond scum” type pollutants.   Switching on the particulate pond filter, like the basket filter, will give some long visible results.   A bacterial filter takes a while just to clean up fouled water and this can take as long as a couple of months.  The garden pond filters need to be installed before you see any algae problem to prevent more trouble of having to clean some mess once the plants are established.

The pond volume will have a significant effect on the results of any given type of filtration.   Pond filters are not the area where one should consider cutting corners, to be certain.   The filters should have the capacity to filter at least half of the pond’s total water volume every hour.  Clearly, for bigger ponds, you should expect to spend a larger amount of money in terms of filtration technology.   While this may seem excessive, without proper filtration the fish in the pond will inevitably become sick and die.
