What Separates Us From The Animals Now?

Most people will never have to know very much about survival. I should say most people who are reading this will never have to know too much about survival and bushcraft. When you consider that two thirds of the worlds population have never made a telephone call it puts what we in the west and the rest of the world consider normal into sharp relief.

It’s kind of a sad when you look at it, we’ve developed so far as far as our western culture goes that we’ve forgotten how to make fire of, in many cases even make bread. Of all the things that distinguish us from the other primates and animal kingdom at large, it’s the ability to make fire but now the paradox is that the most advanced societies’ members can no longer do it without a match or lighter.

In order to feel the thrill of adrenaline that used to be part and parcel of the huntergathering experience more and more people are taking adventure holidays and indulging in extreme sports. But how would they, or you for that matter cope if you needed to survive on your wits? There are often stories in the media about people who survive despite all the odds like the three boys who were picked up months after the search was called off near Fiji having survived on the rain that collected in the hull of their boat and by eating raw seagull meat. Then there are other people like hill walkers who die from exposure or a fall just hours or a few miles from help because they haven’t had the first idea of what to do in that kind of situation. You don’t have to go on specialist arctic courses, you just need to have some idea what you’re doing. There’s an expression “There’s no such thing as Bad Weather, just unsuitable clothing” so you should always dress appropriately, carry the right equipment like a compass and a Gransfors axe if you’re in the woods and make sure you know how to use them.
