We have heard about the saying, “Learn to love your work, and you will then never have to work again.” Makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? If you just enjoy what you are doing, then what seems to be a boring career could turn into play, simply by making it more fun. The problem is, several jobs and the things that all of us do in real life just isn’t enjoyable so some simple mind setting would not have the desired effect. But now, Volkswagen is applying a philosophy as outdated as time and taking it to an entirely new stage. And it seems that other companies are usually catching on. It’s called the “fun theory” and several experiments have been done to verify this business philosophy, so easy, that even a 5 years old can relate with. And it’s so down to earth; it’s really awesome that it is not fully utilized, not up to now. The concept is to make monotonous jobs, activities or even products fun and it will change people’s mindset in the direction of it. One experiment carried out was to install digital piano sounds at the stairs of your sub-way besides an escalator. When an individual steps on the flight of stairs, they could hear piano notes, and almost instantly people got interested. Before the experiment, there were approximately 10% – 12% of commuters choosing the escalator though only one day of the test, practically more than half of commuters wanted to wander on the piano stairs. It indicates that when we put enjoyable into something, people’s attitudes are usually changed for the better. In the electronic and communication business, there is hardly time for fun and jokes. Each organization competing for the top area, executive making daily selections that could cost a company huge amounts of money, but product designers try to put ‘fun’ in their products and also gadget. Ever wondered why RIM called their new tablet computer the Blackberry PlayBook? See, now you are becoming the idea, don’t you? And Apple and other industries related to Apple are going to follow this path of fun. Some people acquire iPhone insurance because it will cover their own smartphone from theft, damage and even accidental damages, and so they know it’s beneficial. But would certainly putting some form of fun into getting one thing already important such as insurance for iPhone enhance people’s consciousness and sales even further? Apple is about to join the ‘fun theory’ mania as well, no doubt. So don’t be amazed the next gen of Apple products, iPhone insurance, iPhone case, iPhone apps and themes etc. could have a hint of making you come to feel you are a kid once again.
