Candle making can be all kinds of fun, and the outcome of your projects can be viewed fairly quickly. Nevertheless, some people quickly get unhappy with their efforts and frustrated with the candle making process. Here we shall take a look at some problem areas novices experience, and we shall explore the answer too. If you are not experienced at candle making, then you need to learn some of the basics before moving forward to creating  more complicated candles.

These days there are plenty of candle making supplies out there, and it can be difficult to know what to select. However, for the most part, candle making supplies are low-priced, and it is a good strategy to use good quality candle wax or gel. This option will give you better results. The temperature that you warm the wax to makes a difference to the end result. If it isn’t hot enough, the candle won’t form correctly, but if it is too hot, then the candle make relinquish its shine, and might not be as robust once it cools.

If the candles you have made have a tendency to smoke too much, then you can very easily resolve this. It is brought on by the wick of the candle being too long, so lowering the wick nearer to the wax will solve the problem easily. If it is still smoking, then try lowering a little more off the wick. It actually doesn’t need to be very long at all, may be only a 1 / 4 of an inch in length.

A different problem for some candle makers, is that as soon as their candle is lit up, it burns a crater in the center, but the edges of the candle, or around the edge of the jar remain fresh. This is caused by a wick that is too skinny for the size of the vessel, or the diameter of the candle you have made. It is not possible to repair, unless you melt the wax and reform using a thicker wick. Or you can braid 3 skinny wicks with each other to produce a heavier version which will help your candle burn more towards its edges.

While first preparing candles, it can be tempting to try to rush the cooling process, but this is a crucial stage of candle making, and you need to use patience! Do not move the candle while it is cooling, as the movement might trigger air bubbles to form, leading to difficulties burning the candle. Keep the candle on a flat surface, and out of direct sunlight too. Check out the area you have decided on, as you don’t want it to be close to heat vents that are in use over the winter, or to a blower if it is summertime.

If you have designed a candle in a glass container, and you discover that the wax has drawn away from the glass a little, then for your next candle making session, heat the jars a little in the microwave to start with, just for a minute or two immediately before you pour in the wax. This will help the wax connect to the wall of the jar, and will give the candle a better more standard look.

As with the majority of hobbies, practice makes perfect, and the great news about candle making is that if you produce something that doesn’t look good you can just melt the wax and start again!
