Human beings have a great love of adornment, and one event that provides them with a chance to dress up and to buy jewelry can be a marriage ceremony. Most cultures use symbols to point a person’s wedded status, and an enduring mark is that of the wedding band. Wedding bands have been in use for thousands of years and there is ample evidence of this fact from paintings and also sculpture although the exact origin of the practice is obscure. What is clear however is that the ancients invested the circle with many magical associations since it is endless. This is probably the key reason why it was chosen to represent marriage.

It is believed that the ancient Egyptians popularized the usage of rings to represent marriage, and also the practice was then adopted by the Greeks and it was then forwarded to the Romans. Since the Roman civilization was the foundation of Western civilization as we know it today, it is not difficult to understand why the use of wedding bands has become popular today.

The material used to make the wedding rings as well the finger it was worn on has altered over the ages. The ancient Romans were known to wear wedding rings manufactured from iron or bronze. This practice changed over the ages and the practice of wearing gold rings became common during medieval times. By this period, the purpose of the ring altered from mere indication of marriage to denoting how valuable the couple was to each other.

The use of a wedding band became widespread in the medieval ages when Pope Innocent the Third who rules in the 12th century decreed that all marriages had to be performed in a church, and that the wedding ceremony would only be complete if it included a wedding band. This kind of rule gave the wedding band a great religious significance that continues till today.

Even the finger where the wedding ring was worn changed over the ages. It was formerly worn on the third finger of the left hand because this finger was considered to have a nerve or artery running directly to the heart. Furthermore, this hand is nearer to the heart. King Edward VI of England was accountable for making this official and the Book of Common Prayer instructed everybody to do so. However, many European women choose to wear the ring on their right hand.

Most couples spend lots of time and money while choosing an engagement ring, but it’s a wedding band that has primacy over it. This ring no longer has any magical symbolism, and it has lost a lot of its religious value nowadays. However, it is still worn because of cultural reasons, especially to indicate that one is no longer available to other partners and to signify ones commitment to the marriage. There is a large choice of bands for hire that they can choose from unlike in olden days, and it is possible to get a set that matches their expectations and also their particular budget.
