How to Opt Out of Medicare

Opting out of Medicare starts with a philosophic alternative. While some doctors may find Medicare and 3rd party payers tolerable, many are starting to seriously ask themselves if they are doomed to continue practicing medicine in the current environment.

You should explore http://www.optoutmedicare.com :

  1. you believe in free markets,
  2. you beleive the doctor/patient relationship has been compromised by government and the insurance industry
  3. you feel that you should work for your patients and not for 3rd party insurers including Medicare.
  4. you find government regulation and bureaucracy crushing, and taking every bit of personal time you have left for yourself and your family. .

If you answered yes to any or all of the above listing , then learning more about your right to opt out of Medicare and 3rd party insurance is something you should investigate. . This site provides a tool to help you in this consideration. You may ask yourself whether participation in Medicare is consistent with your values. You may be able to serve your patients better-even Medicare-eligible patients-if you opt out.

Opting out of Medicare also involves an financialt choice. First, you must consider the risks you face for accepting the status quot : the continuing uncertainty of the SGR formula, the ever-growing threat of predatory Medicare “fraud police” (RAC audit) even for doctors who do their best to code correctly, the continual push for you to have less and less compensation, then make up the difference by seeing more patients, the high overhead associated with participation in government and insurance programs.

Opting out of Medicare may result in a loss of income -perhaps temporary, possibly permanent. But, consider what current government regulations may do to your future income, your ability to practice medicine as you see fit, and to your personal freedoms . Doing nothing does not forestall government-created erosion of your income and freedoms. Your practice may “recover” after opting out, leaving you with more time to see fewer patients, and relieving you of much of the severe penalties and voluminous paperwork that are destroying our profession .

It is also important to consider that the lost work and lost Medicare income are not at all proportional . Medicare will continue to pay you less while government regulations and associated administrative costs (time and money) will continue to escalate. The loss of a Medicare patient as a patient/customer means the loss of low compensation coupled with higher and higher costs. When you find yourself breaking even or losing money, you cannot make it up by seeing more patients. Opting out of Medicare may result in more time for yourself . Many doctors would happily trade some income for less stress and more time for themselves and their families. Remember, “they can’t tax your time off” (yet).

So why would you continue to accept Medicare? You may think that patients won’t pay you, and that patients won’t see you. It may feel like you are only providing care to wealthy patients. But, the truth is, patients from all walks of life are discovering that insurance without access has is not worth the price of “free care” . The uninsured, the under-insured, and any patient looking for better access to a real doctor are often more than willing and able to pay for your services your services are priced reasonably; services that are becoming a rare commodity.  And, significantly, with a direct pay model , the price is actually a REAL price.

Justice for the American People

The last six words of the pledge of allegiance are; “with liberty and justice for all”. Note that it does not say “social” justice for all . Maybe whomever wrote the pledge just forgot to add the word social when he wrote it. Or maybe “social justice” means something entirely different than justice “for all”. If justice is not established equally among all citizens can we really proclaim that it is just? Is Social Justice synonymous with Human Rights?

So just what is social justice? Where did it come from , and why is it meaningful ? Social justice is a term social activists have been using for more than a hundred years . These socialists believe that the scale of justice must be weighted on the side of certain minority groups so that they may better keep up with the Joneses. They believe that industrious, economic individuals who produce much more than they consume somehow owe some or all of their increase to those who, for whatever reason, produce much less than they wish to consume . The former Soviet Union was a classic example of an experiment in social justice. When people have to work twice as hard as somebody else and to give them half of what they aquire always ends in disaster. Look at the case with the Pilgrims, they went from a Socialist Society to a Capitalist Society very quickly because the former was failing miserably.

The majority of those who favor social justice in the United States of America come from the Democratic party, and have personified themselves as “liberals”, ‘though they are now better known as “progressives”.  Is it possible that those democrats, who’s party originated in the slave states , believed that they were practicing social justice when they provided Africans with socialism, i.e. free housing, free food, free jobs, free education, free healthcare, etc., also known as slavery, on the plantations? Did they believe that the African race could not compete in a free society?Ask the Africans back then if they believed in a Socialist Society instead of freedom?  Justice Taney opined as much in the infamous “Dredd Scott Decision”, where it was ruled that Africans would not be allowed the status of “citizens” of the several states.

Today progressives remain dedicated to the proposition that African Americans, among other minority groups are unable to compete equally in a free society . The proof of this may be found in programs such as affirmative action, in the rantings of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, and in the lowering of standards in schools and civil job application exams. Ever hear the term the “dumbing down of America?”.

Furthermore , may it be said that social justice rests on the premise that “we the intelligentsia” must assume the role of God , to dispose equality unto those races which were not created equal. Only a true individual with extreme prejudice could adhere to such a philosophy .

Remember how Social Activists keep preaching the separation of Church and State? Then why do they continually want to play the role of God?

Every year at the beginning of November people young and old in the Great Britain and all other commonwealth nations start to wear a red poppy in the run up to Armistice Day on 11th November. Often known as Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom, it is the day we remember the men and women who have died in battle in the protection of their country. The Armistice was the deal that concluded World War I and it was signed on 11th November 1918 at 11am.

At 11 o’clock on the eleventh day of the 11th month, United Kingdom pauses for 2 minutes to observe a silence. Remembrance Sunday is observed on the second Sunday in November with marches, memorial services and the laying of wreaths at war memorials in cities, towns and villages all over  Great Britain. The image of Remembrance is the poppy and it has been adopted by the Royal British Legion who do so much good work to assist ex – service men and women.

The year after the end of World War I, King George V dedicated a day to recognize the individuals who had fallen all through the four year war and the first two minute silence was held in London on 11th November 1919 at 11am. The following day, the Manchester Guardian published that the 2 minute silence was impeccably observed.

The poppy was chosen as the symbol of Remembrance for two reasons; its red colour reflected the bloodshed and the in the war torn fields of Flanders, the poppy was one of the few living things to blossom. The poppy is described in the poem “In Flanders Fields” which was published by the Canadian doctor John McCrae in 1915.

The design of the poppy worn as a symbolic representation of Remembrance varies slightly from country to country. In Great Britain, the arrangement of the poppy is a flat, firm paper leaf fitted on a plastic stem. Some also have a single green leaf and it is held in position with in a single pin.

Wreaths laid at memorials on Armistice Day and throughout the year are usually made of artificial poppies and today countries every where have taken the poppy as the universal symbol of Remembrance.
